Exterior Wood Staining

The advantages of using a stain are often overlooked. Stains don’t require primers. Stains seal the surface and can be reapplied in the future with little to no preparation. Basically wash the surface and install another coat. Stains weather uniformly and are designed to weather evenly. Because you expect to re-paint wood frequently it makes sense to stain a wood product and then just install another coat in the future without having to go through an entire preparation cycle.

Stains also enhance the beauty of wood. Natural elements like wood are generally enhanced by stain and can add dimension and warmth to an otherwise cold surface.

Wood weathers and wears over time and sometimes it will also become stained by waiting too long to reapply more stains. If this is the case the surface stain must be removed and the entire surface will require sanding. Sanding to a uniform, clean surface will allow the stain to penetrate evenly and leave the finish looking consistent. Great surface preparation is the key to outstanding results. This is a step that can’t be overlooked. Skip a step and the wood won’t look correct or the beauty of the natural wood grain will be masked.

There is great debate over the types of stains available outside for decks and patios. More times than not we recommend environmentally friendly options and water-borne stains. But sometimes the amount of snow and ice will require a moisture resistant finish and we have experience with the long term result. Call us today and we’ll be happy to explain.

SPECIALIZING IN THESE SURFACES:

  • Wood Siding
  • Eaves & Fascia
  • Thresholds
  • Gates
  • Decks & Railings
  • Doors & Windows
  • Prestained Wood

Prestaining is simply staining the wood before installation. Reasons:

  • It may be a good idea to stain all sides of the wood prior to installation outdoors.
  • The wood can be stained indoors in environmentally acceptable conditions and cured before being installed in below freezing temperatures.
  • Greater Color Control
  • Even application of material. Most of the time, the material will be flood coated on siding and it will be applied evenly.
  • Increase installation timeframe

Problems with Prestaining

  • Color generally is difficult to select without understanding all the other elements on the building
  • Batch consistency is a large problem for paint suppliers. Every Board will have to be an exact match or you will then be repainting the entire area again.
  • Decision on Color- It is very difficult to visualize a color prior to seeing the building. Only a professional designer or Architect has the ability to see the color prior to installation or construction.

Moorhouse Coating has proven systems and results for setting the standard for wood finishing. We have a vast amount of experience that gives us a competitive advantage over others in the field.

Concrete Stain

Applying a coat of acid or water based stain will add color to new concrete or take care of any discoloration that has occured to an existing surface. Discoloration of concrete driveways can be due to a number of causes including improper color application, weathering, sun exposure, and absorption of stubborn grease and oil stains.

1.Solid-Color Stain: The best option for a dramatic change in the color of your concrete is a water based stain that will penetrate into the concrete rather forming a surface film. Once cured this stain will provide a natural colored concrete look. The concrete will need to be free of all other sealers and coatings prior to application in order for the stain to penetrate properly. No additional sealer is required for this process, but can be used if desired. 2.Transparent/ Semi-Transparent Stain: This is the best option for a subtle change in color. As with the solid color stain, the concrete will need to be free of all other coatings to allow it to penetrate the concrete. A sealer is typically used to lock in the color. Translucent Stain offers a natural look which will highlight the natural variations in concrete. This can be used in multiple color combinations to achieve a unique multi-toned appearance.

Stains require an applicator with experience and a range of application techniques. If you are considering a contract for a staining project, hire someone with a wide range of experience.
