Scaling Sustainably: Navigating Growth Without Losing Core Values
The Challenge of Expansion
Moorhouse Coating’s journey from a single location in Park City to a multi-site operation represents a critical inflection point for many successful small businesses. The path to growth is fraught with challenges, but with strategic planning and unwavering commitment to core principles, scaling can be both sustainable and transformative. It’s taken 4 seasons to uncouple from the emphasis of working in Park City to multiple locations. Many challenges along the way include:
-
Who is our customer?
- Traditionally we’ve been a commercial painting contractor capable of taking on very large painting and coating projects. As we continue to expand it’s really about taking on average and small size paint jobs that seem to be where most of the new growth. We have extensive experience in managing complex projects with advanced planning and staging and systems in place with checks and balances to ensure delivery dates and accuracy of color and repeatability our possible.
-
What do we do when Jason Moorhouse isn’t available?
- Funny enough. I’ve been known to do everything. I’m capable and able to do every element the business has to offer, but decoupling what I do to what others can do has made for some very humorous and interesting events.
-
Where else should we work? What are the next cities and regions to service? What is similar to Summit County and the Wasatch back?
- Mountain communities are in my blood. I’m such an addict to mountain living, sports and recreation. Where can I do all of those things in another community? Pretty tough to beat Park City, Utah!
-
What services are needed in other markets different from our core service offerings in mountain communities.
- We’ve grown alongside of the Mountain and over 25 years that’s created a lot of change. The delivery schedule, the window of service and the emphasis on the tourist and vistors has taken priority over the laid back approach of yesteryear.
