According to a recent survey, the most popular color choice of homes across the country is white, off-white, beige, tan, or brown. These neutral colors were followed by gray, blue, green, and yellow. Not surprisingly, red and pink came in dead last.

Experts say that staged homes sell faster and for higher prices. Painting the interior of your home is an important, as well as a low-cost and effective, way of showcasing your home. If you still have “pinky” beige or peach walls from the 80’s or on a whim decided to paint a room fluorescent green, it’s definitely time for an update. If you plan to stay in your home, paint colors are a personal choice.

When it’s time to sell a home, however, you need to stop thinking about what you want or like and choose paint colors that will appeal to the widest range of buyers. Once again, a neutral color palette is the best bet for the interior of your home.

However, that doesn’t mean you should to stick to white. Choose rich neutral colors that inspire a sense of calm and warmth such as muted beige or sophisticated light gray tones which can attract buyers.

A few more cautions to keep in mind:

  • Since light colors make a room appear larger, do not use dark colors in small rooms such as bathrooms or laundry rooms.
  • Stay away from bright colors in bedrooms where buyers typically want a peaceful, calm atmosphere. You might consider a soothing blue gray that reflects well in photos.
  • Accent colors should be used sparingly. A better and safer way to use bright accent colors is with accessories such as window treatments, pillows, or artwork.
  • Since one of the goals of painting is to add value to your home and increase its resale value, consider hiring an experienced professional to ensure quality results.
